I found a Koma LINK 15.6 at my wife's dad's cottage. It needs work, and I'm wondering if there's any hope for it.
The mast and boom are fine, and the rudder was stored out of the weather. The sail is somewhere, apparently in good condition, but I haven't seen it. All the sheets are missing, but that's easy enough to fix.
The daggerboard is completely ruined. The deck hatch on the back is broken, but likely can be fixed without too much trouble (or replaced with wood).
But the big concern for me is that there's some exposed wood from the internal framing, and it seems like its been weathered. This is most notable in the area around the mast step. There's no bubbling of the fibreglass though, the "damage" seems to be limited to the 1/8th inch exposed at the edges.
Any comments?
Is there any information on this boat? This is all that I have found online.
Evening Maury, Glad to hear of the possible reurrection of another LINK. Our LINK was purchased as a "BASKET CASE" approx. 8 years ago. I was more interested in the value of the fittings installed by the previous owner than the actual boat. However, upon closer inspection, the boat did seem to justify giving it some tender loving care. I have made many changes to the LINK based on my experience of other sailboats and am happy to report that the improvements outlined on this blog have stood up to the ravages of time and three owners since I owned this craft. Two of the 3 owners have graduated to larger sailboats after being introduced to sailing via the LINK. The third owner continues to enjoy sailing the LINK today. You have to decide if the wooden components, even tho they were supposedly encapsulated in fibreglass are structural or cosmetic. If structural, ignore them at your own peril. Cheers Lorne P.S. This blog is the only source of information on the LINK that I am aware of.
